The Little Black Dress- sometimes it’s the one item you need in your closet. Think about it, have you ever sat in front of your closet and pondered the age old question, “Why do I have nothing to wear?”. You then tear apart your closet with hundreds of things you know would work, but they just aren’t classic enough. Then it happens, your gaze falls upon the item you know will change the course of the evening. Then you figure it out- the little black dress. The one item every woman should own. Today I am going to show you how and when to wear this classic piece, and how all the icons you know and love trademarked it. Let’s take a journey, a journey to the time the little black dress was created.
So here’s the thing. I have always had three rules:
- If it is good enough for the queen, it’s good enough for me.
- If it is good enough for Audrey Hepburn and Chanel, it’s good enough for me.
- I will always love cats, even if other people say I will become a crazy cat lady one day. Like, here’s hoping.
So what does that mean? Well, we have all heard that classic phrase that every woman says once in here life. “Hi, I’m looking for a a dress for this event.”
There is something about the a little black dress that fits for nearly every occasion. Think about it.
Wedding – Check
Dinner – Check
Funeral (sad) – but check
GNO – Check
I mean the list goes on and on. It’s the gift that keeps on giving, and we have some very important people in history to thank for this. Chanel and Audrey Hepburn are the two leading ladies that come to mind when it comes to this topic. It is said that in 1920 CoCo Chanel trademarked this piece of clothing, and of course, women all over the world started wearing their LBDs loud and proud. Historically this dress is literally labeled as being: long-lasting, affordable, versatile, and accessible. Has any of this changed in nearly 100 years? Now that’s what I call a well made dress.
If you are sitting there and you either don’t have a LBD (I’ve listed all my favs throughout this post), OR you have one and don’t know how to wear it. I’m going to tell you!
The beauty of a little black dress, is its ability to match nearly any accessory. Whether you want to pair it with other black accessories, or gold earrings and necklaces. In this post, I decided to pair this linen black dress with simple accessories that wouldn’t take away from the design, but accentuate it. I also love that its super easy to pair it with nearly any shoe choice. I would say that most women have a pair of black heels hiding in their closet. So it’s a win/win. Your heels get to come out and play, and your dress gets a matching friend!
Okay so my favorite part about this iconic piece is knowing that when I put it on, a little piece of Breakfast at Tiffanys starts running through my veins. The fact that Givenchy continued the legacy of the LBD through the most timeless movie of all time, on one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN OF ALL TIME, gives me chills.
Guys, it gives me real life chills.
It comes straight back to my original thought. If it’s good enough for Audrey, it truly is good enough for us all!
I originally bought this dress for a wedding, and the knowing that it was linen really worked for this summer! It was extremely hot on the day of the wedding, but this fabric kept me very cool. I also love the ability for the little black dress to transition from season to season. I know that I can purchase one for the upcoming holidays and into the new year! Come next year, I’m sure I will come back around to this dress and it will still be in style and forever versatile.
If you have any sort of event coming up, be confident in knowing that the LBD will suit you well and it will never sit in the back of your closet begging for fresh oxygen. There are dresses in all shapes and lengths and that’s just the beauty of the dang thing.
Just like Audrey and Chanel
