Can you smell it? Can you smell the fall air? Maybe it’s just the Uggs or the Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL always). But I know it’s here! Now is the time to prepare your wardrobe to transition from summer to fall. Well almost. For many of you, the ending of summer is devastating. For me, it’s like Christmas! Fall in Oregon is beautiful and everything about the ending of the hot and smokey summer is glorious. One of the weirdest times for fashion is in the changing season though. Like, is it hot? Is it cold? Why is it both hot AND cold? What do I wear.. Shorts, t-shirts, light layers? What the heck are light layers anyway… I just pictured a mom from the 90’s with a cardigan and windbreaker.
I’m here to learn with you, because sometimes I wear the same thing 4 days in a row because that’s the only thing that makes sense to me. But how can we change that? By combining things of course.
I think we will start with the obvious! Light layers.
One of my favorite outfit combos is a short sleeve top with pants or capris (again with the 90’s). I find that I get way colder on my bottom half than vise versa. Also it’s so much easier to throw on a jacket, then to try and cover up your legs in a public place. I mean you could wrap you jacket around your legs like a skirt and start a new trend OR be prepared.
WEATHER, WEATHER, WEATHER people. That’s the first think I look at when I get up in the morning. You want to be prepared. Snow, sleet, or rain, you still gotta look good. Like mailmen, they gotta deliver the mail when it’s freezing, and you gotta deliver your style no matter what.
Of course when we are dressing for success and for functionality, I tend to veer towards items that I can wear A LOT. And I mean a lot. I don’t have a ton of money to drop on a whole new wardrobe every year, so when I do buy something I want to make sure it’s a good one. These Mary Jane shoes from Mango have saved my LIFE for these past years. I wear them no matter the season, and honestly were such a good purchase. Those babes accompanied with my whole outfit, which was under $50 for both items BTW, really does the trick for me.
I purcahsed this linen top from Urban Outfitters on super sale and these Mango pants from Poshmark. Posh is a great tool to utilize when you want to get started on a new wardrobe! Especially when you want to transition from summer to fall. I check it every day and always get the best deals.
Okay, so what if you are sitting there and you are all like, “But Olivia, I never have problems with my legs getting cold, it’s always my arms!”. Well, never fear young one, mommy is here to save the day! (creepy much?). One bit of fashion I’m seriously obsessed with, is a long sleeve top under a dress! In this case, I utilized it with a Pinafore from Mango (Again with the Mango, fav store, can you tell?) What’s a pinafore you might ask? Just ask your mom, she will know… Seriously she will. This was def one of my favorite outfits this spring. There is just something so cute about adding light layers (now I’m just pulling your leg), to an outfit to spice things up.
Okay, now we need to pause for a commercial break and talk about Sneakers. I always call them tennis shoes and then feel like I’m 80 years old. But really, sneakers with dresses! Cute right? Are you a fan? I switch my opinion back and forth, but I think overall with specific outfits it can be really cute. Also so comfy. I’m hardly ever comfortable in my life, so that’s nice. These Kenneth Cole sneakers worked well this ensemble (said like Tim Gunn from Project Runway), and it makes me toy with the idea of getting those platform sneakers everyone is looking so cute wearing.
The last thing on my list for today, is this long sleeve top from Topshop. Now listen up. We all need some good basics in our closet, and this one has been the best of friends to me! I have sported this top for about 3 years now, and it works so well for the days you just want to be cute and casual. OR if you want to put it under a cute as frick pinafore. This was so worth the buy and I want one in every color.
So there you have it! Though there aren’t many things on this list, this will get you going as you transition from summer to fall, and help you not break the bank doing so. So let’s recap. WEATHER, LIGHT LAYERS, SNEAKERS (or no sneakers? We haven’t decided yet) AND GOOD LAYERING TEES. Comment below with you wardrobe staples so I can try them out!
